GREAT FALLS — Comments made on social media by a faculty member at Montana State University-Northern in Havre are drawing sharp criticism after the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk in Utah.

The remarks came from Dr. Samantha Balemba-Brownlee, an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice.

Screenshots circulating online have fueled outrage from community members and on social media.

In response, MSU-Northern Chancellor Greg Kegel released the following statement on Friday:

Montana State University-Northern has been made aware of comments made online by one of our faculty members regarding recent events. The university is dedicated to creating a supportive learning environment focused on student success, one that embraces intellectual diversity and openness.

The comments this faculty member made are the opinions of that individual. They do not represent the opinions of MSU-Northern or reflect our institution's values.

MSU-Northern has placed the faculty member on leave while we evaluate the situation. As a public employee, this individual has rights and protections, and the university will follow established processes as we determine any appropriate steps to take.
