The City of Helena is holding their annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Saturday August 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Transfer Station.

The City hopes this event will help encourage people to properly dispose of their hazardous items and not just pour them down the drain, which then puts toxins into the water system.

“This is just a great reminder to go ahead and clean out your household of these things that can build up overtime and be toxic to children and pets,” said Rebecca Connors, Public Works public information officer .

Items that will be accepted include: aluminum paints, oil-based paints and stains, paint thinner, de-greasers, flammable liquids, aerosol paints, fluorescent tubes, mercury thermometers and thermostats, acids and bases - (sulfuric acid/hydrochloric acid), bleach, cleaning agents, ammonia water, sodium hydroxide, pesticides and poisons, oxidizers, reactives and pcb ballasts.

The City will not accept latex paint, empty paint and aerosol cans or radioactive material.

Explosives like ammunition, gun powder or other blasting materials will also not be accepted.

City of Helena and Scratchgravel residential permits will be required on the day of the event.

Businesses will not be able to dispose of hazardous waste at this event, but can make other arrangements with Clean Harbors Environmental by visiting their website.

More information about the event, including how to properly dispose of hazardous materials, can be found on the City of Helena Solid Waste-Recycling division’s webpage.
