ExplorationWorks in Helena held their 8th Annual Girls’ STEM Round-up.

“Girls can do it all. We can be a princess and a scientist,” says Shea.

2019 Miss Montana, Mo Shea, was the keynote speaker of the 8th Annual Girls’ STEM Round-up. Grade-school girls gathered for a hands-on experience at Carroll College.

These girls are learning about STEM which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

“Science is for everyone,” says Shea.

There were about 107 girls from grades 5-8 in attendance with 20 different workshops to choose from a STEM-related field. These workshops range from stem-related fields such as surgeries to veterinary work. According to ExplorationWorks, each workshop is taught by female leaders in the STEM profession who volunteered to teach the next generation.

“I think it is just great to see all these female leaders leading these workshops, so these girls can see themselves in the future, becoming engineers, becoming mathematicians. Doing all these incredible things,” says Kelly Posewitz, the Executive Director at ExplorationWorks.

Kelly also says that these workshops, with the leaders, can be the spark for the girls to pursue a career in STEM.

“That’s what makes the difference. When they have those one-on-one connections, and really feel like they’re being heard. That’s really gonna help them and spark that interest so they will continue to pursue science,” says Kelly.

ExplorationWorks is part of a non-profit organization that provides hands-on experiences for kids and their families to explore science.
