DARBY – A group of hunters in the Bitterroot fought to rescue an elk that became trapped in a barbed wire fence near Darby.

Cathy Dunsing and her husband Ed were driving on Rye Creek Road when they were flagged down by a man walking in the opposite direction.

Luckily the couple had a pair of wire cutters to help free the young spike. When they arrived, the pair found the animal had its head stuck under its body and tangled in the fence.

After cutting the elk free from the wire, the animal it struggled for a few moments to get back on its feet but the Dunsings said the elk appeared fine as it ran off into the woods.
