HELENA — Across the Treasure State, more than 21,000 people live with Alzheimer's. More than 18,000 caregivers statewide dedicate 26 million hours of unpaid care, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

It is not only those living with the disease that need the support but also loved ones who are often caregivers. Salus Adult Day Health, a new space set to open in Helena, is helping fill a need in the state.

“I had a grandfather who suffered from Alzheimer's, and he didn’t have any options, and I want to change that,” Amanda Sather, the owner of Salus Adult Day Health, said.

It’s a change Sather is making in Helena using her nursing background.

Salus gives caregivers a break and provides a space for those with Alzheimer’s to have a meal, socialize with others, and engage in activities.

The Salus facility has space for twenty adults.

“This will give them a place to let their loved one come safely and be treated with compassion, and kindness, and patience,” Sather added.

A licensed nurse will always be on site, serving up to 20 adults per day, with resting, dining, activity and outdoor spaces.

“It is a 24/7 disease. It does not go to bed at nine and wake up at six,” Melanie Williams, the program coordinator for Montana’s chapter of the Alzheimers Association, said.

This space is something the Alzheimers Association says is needed more than ever, as this is one of only a handful of stand-alone adult care facilities in the state.

“Definitely needed. Montana is actually considered an underserved state, meaning we do not have the workforce, and we don’t have the infrastructure to support those living with dementia and their caregivers,” Williams said.

“Let's make a difference. Let’s change the way Montana goes forward with our seniors. We need more facilities like this,” Sather added.

Tours and pre-enrollment are available for Salus Adult Day Health at satheramanda@yahoo.com, with an opening date of Nov. 1.
