Man dies after being hit by vehicle west of Philipsburg

A man was hit and killed by the vehicle he was a passenger in after getting out to open a gate near Philipsburg on Saturday.

The Montana Highway Patrol said that at around 6 a.m. Saturday, the 75-year-old man from Churchville, Virginia, had gotten out of the vehicle to open a gate after the driver stopped on secondary road 348, near Marshall Creek Road west of Philipsburg.

The driver, a 73-year-old Philipsburg man, hit the gas and ran over the passenger.

The driver stopped shortly after and was uninjured, according to MHP.

The names of the victim and the driver have not been released at this point.

There is no word yet on whether the driver may face any charges, and the MHP is continuing to investigate.
