HELENA —

Last Friday at around 5 p.m. the Helena Fire department was dispatched for a rescue on Mount Helena.

A man tried to climb up the rock face on the west end of the 1906 trail and become stuck on a ledge.

The climber was not utilizing climbing equipment and decided to call 911, with the assistance of a friend who was below on the trail.

The Helena Fire Department used their Polaris 6x6 UTV to shuttle rescuers and equipment to the top of Mount Helena; they then paged Lewis & Clark County Search and Rescue to assist.

Search and Rescue responded with several members and ATV's, along with the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Office.

The climber was eventually located, and responders determined that the best course of action was to anchor from above, deploy a rescuer to the climber, then hoist both up off the rock face.

Several members from the Helena Fire Department were called in off-duty to assist, and with the help of Search and Rescue they were able to hoist the climber and the rescuer to safety.

The climber was not injured and was brought down to the parking area at 8:45 p.m.
