BUTTE – Even though the building was finished in February, the Butte American Legion waited until Saturday, the group’s 100th birthday, to celebrate.

Joining the military is a big sacrifice. Vietnam veteran Mike Lawson wasn’t just scared to leave, but he was also scared to make his way home.

“Coming back, I was wondering to fight on my own soil,” Lawson told MTN.

But since he returned, the Butte community has shown nothing but love.

“The night-and-day difference of coming back and today is very, very inspiring,” Lawson said.

Like everything else in Butte, the history of the Legion runs deep. That’s because post one was formed in Butte even before the national headquarters formed.

100 years and over 82 commanders have graced the organization’s history.
