Missoula Housing Authority receives Section 8 housing vouchers

The Missoula Housing Authority has received 20 new Section 8 housing vouchers to provide a place to live for disabled families in the area.

It’s a very competitive process and this is the first time in years the city has received the allotment which is part of the Mainstream Voucher program.

The MHA plans to work with Opportunity Resources, Summit Independent Living and the YWCA in Missoula who will help find those who qualify and get them settled. The vouchers will serve disabled people transitioning out of other institutions or facilities and those in the Rapid Re-housing program .

“Neither of those populations have been served, that’s another reason why we selected them. There are other programs that serve other populations, and this was one that -- this funding could do that hasn’t been addressed before," Director of HUD Programs Jim McGrath explained. "Again, another drop in the bucket but it’s 20 more than the housing authority had last month and frankly, 15 years ago."

There are about 400 people on the list that would qualify for the vouchers and you can click here for more information. The MHA hopes to have people moved into their new homes or apartments in early 2020.
