About 200 high school students visited the Montana Air National Guard on Friday to see what the airmen do.

This is the second year the Guard has hosted its “Operation Open Hangar” Event.

“We did a trial run last year with one school and this year we were so excited that so many different schools took advantage of the opportunity,” said Technical Sergeant Nikolas Asmussem, a recruiter for the Montana Air National Guard.

Operation Open Hangar gives students from eight schools the chance to handle equipment and learn about all the different jobs the Guard offers. The students were able to talk to security forces members, medical staff, and even the see inside a C-130.

TSgt Asmussen noted, “I love talking with them. They get so amazed, they are like, ‘I had no idea you could do this in the Air Guard. What do you mean you can serve one weekend a month and still go to college?’ It really is an amazing opportunity. I did not know about the Air Guard before I got involved and it has been great for me. It is great to share that experience with young people.”
