Cleanup was underway Tuesday at the Pacific Steel & Recycling plant in Lockwood following a major fire.
"Pretty shocking how quickly it moved and the intensity of it," said Jason Heath, Pacific Recycling branch manager. "We had people in place to where they should have been right away just like I said the intensity of it really really was an uphill battle for us."
Investigators estimate the fire caused more than a million dollars in damage. The fire started on a conveyor belt that was moving heated material into a building.
The fire hasn't hindered the business, Heath says, and it shouldn't discourage consumers from bringing in recycling materials.
"They will get the other parts of that machine online and still do business as usual. As far as the other line, but we are working on a plan with what we are going to do with what that facility that burned does for us," Heath said.
The shredder that burned predominantly is the one sorting our aluminum, Heath said.
"We did everything we are supposed to. The fire departments were incredible. Their response time was great. They had lots of tenders and rigs out here so they did the best they could for us as well. "
There was one employee injured in the fire but he refused to be transported to the hospital and is doing OK, Heath said.
