In Helena, 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger, according to Helena Food Share. The organization is hoping to combat that with their annual “Doorsteps to Kid Packs” food drive.
According to the Food Share, AmeriCorps Service Members collected nearly 8,000 pounds of food in 2019 with over $30,000 in monetary donations on Wednesday.
AmeriCorps Service members gathered to pick up donated food on residents’ doorsteps.
The donated food goes to the Helena Food Share’s Kid Pack program, which provides after school and weekend food to over 1,000 students at 17 local schools each week.
“They wake up in their day and they may, most likely do not have breakfast. So, they go to school and they may enjoy a lunch at school. Then, they leave school, and more than likely, they have nothing for dinner, So, this population in Montana that’s even higher under Native American reservations, they may eat only once a day,” says Lisa Bullock, Montana First Lady.
Helena Food Share says the goal for 2020 is to collect 10,000 pounds of food.
There are multiple ways to donate to Helena Food Share from monetary to food donations. The list of ways to donate can be found at the
