Flathead National Forest officials approved a multi-phase expansion project at Whitefish Mountain Resort Wednesday.
The Hellraoring Basin Project will reconfigure the current Hellroaring chair location to improve accessibility and terrain for skiers and snowboarders.
Expansion will include a new char lift in the Hellroaring-area, and eight additional ski runs.
Phase one of the project involves constructing a service road and clearing timber for new runs and a lift line.
Phase two of the project includes relocating chair 8 in 2021, allowing the resort to open Hellroaring Basin earlier in the season.
Flathead National Forest officials administer a permit to the resort allowing access to 3,000 acres of National Forest System land for ski area purposes and has administered the permit to Whitefish Mountain Resort since 1947.
