The Helena School District Board of Trustees has officially started the process of searching for a new superintendent.
Superintendent Tyler Ream plans to step down next summer, after completing his third year in the position.
Trustees have brought in the national consulting firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates to assist with the search. The company also helped Helena Public Schools in 2017 and 2018, when Ream was hired.
The district will begin by working on a “leadership profile,” laying out what they want from a new superintendent. They plan to involve students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members in that process.
School board chair Luke Muszkiewicz said they expect to put out a survey for families and the community to weigh in. They will also hold group meetings – likely virtually – with stakeholders.
Muszkiewicz said they’re remaining open-minded about what the profile will look like.
“That’s why this process is so important on the front end, is to engage with our community, our staff and our students – to see, ‘Have our needs changed? Have they stayed the same?’” he said. “So the leadership profile that comes out of that could be similar; it could be different.”
District leaders plan to have the profile completed by mid-November, and they’ll open the position for applications soon after that. They hope to select a new superintendent by March.
Muszkiewicz said, in the coming weeks, they plan to set up a new section on the district website to keep the public updated on the superintendent search.
