York Fire-Rescue has announced the passing of a well-known and well-respected volunteer.

Don Zimmerman was the department’s assistant chief. In a Facebook post Monday, the department said he had passed away after battling cancer for several months.

“We'll miss his leadership and wisdom, sense of humor and steadfast desire to improve our Department,” they said. “It's good to know that he will always be watching over us.”

York Fire Chief John Naylor said Zimmerman had spent more than 35 years as a firefighter, with departments in Washington state and Montana.

“He was a great guy, and he’s going to be missed,” Naylor said. “He had a lot of friends.”

Leaders said Zimmerman had developed strong relationships with people around the community and with firefighters from many local departments. They thanked everyone who had offered their support over the past few months.

Earlier this year, York Fire-Rescue dedicated its new Station #3 – currently under construction in the Eldorado Heights area – in Zimmerman’s honor.
