The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) says they need more time to review a proposal for a sand and gravel pit in the Helena Valley.

In a statement on Wednesday, the DEQ says during a public meeting last week , they believe people brought up substantial issues not addressed in the permit application.

Those concerns include noise and visual impacts, and effects on the nearby water supply.

The DEQ now has up to 90 more days to review the proposal.

Kim Smith, the owner of Valley Sand and Gravel, wants to mine sand and gravel on a 61-acre site about two miles north of Helena.

If you have any questions, the public is urged to contact the DEQ Opencut Section at (406) 444-4970 or DEQOpencut@mt.gov.
