GREAT FALLS — Jeremy Virts has been chosen as the new Fire Chief of Great Falls Fire Rescue (GFFR), and will begin serving in his new role immediately.
Justin Robicheau reports - watch the video here:
Before joining the fire department, Virts worked as an EMT with an ambulance service and spent more than five years on the Great Falls Police Department.
Virts said getting the job was humbling: "It was a long road getting here. A lot of interviews, going through different panels of people. So it was a long road, but it was worth it. And now we're here, so we got work to do - so hit the ground running."
He described his leadership philosophy as one rooted in service to the men and women of the department.
"Keeping the ship upright. Keeping everything moving steady. Big changes aren't really tolerated well in any organization. So that's what they're looking for a leader to do is just come through, understand what their role in the department is. It's basically a servant leadership role. Getting these ladies and gentlemen what they need to do their job, continue the service that we deliver to the public."
Virts also credited his predecessor, who served six years and left a lasting mark on the department: "He could juggle a lot of things at one time, so that's what he was good at. He was able to capitalize on some ARPA money that came down to implement some needed infrastructure upgrades in our stations. He brought us through a COVID time, which was very challenging. He brought a lot to the department, enthusiasm and care for the people."
Looking ahead, Virts said the biggest challenge facing the department is keeping pace with the growth of the Electric City.
Virts succeeds former Fire Chief Jeremy Jones, who retired from the position several months ago and currently serves as Deputy City Manager for the City of Great Falls.
