As the winter season nears, now might be a good time to prepare your fireplace.

Smitty’s Fireplace Shop recommends checking your chimney to make sure it isn’t clogged up. Also to check door gaskets as they recommend to replace them every two years. The shop says after a long summer, folks tend to lean inflammable items around their stoves or fireplace so to clean the area before using.

They recommend burning your wood stove twice a day, hot, for about 30 minutes as it helps keep the chimney clean.

The President of Smitty’s Fireplace explains why wet wood is bad for your fireplace.

“Wet wood. It just doesn't burn as hot, it leaves moisture in there. You get more of a creosote build up and you get more of a build up throughout the chimney. The fire doesn't burn as hot, and that's when you start seeing those things whether chimney fires, blockage, and stuff like that,” says Shawn Smith, Smitty’s Fireplace Shop President.
