A Bozeman man faces assault charges after allegedly attempting to stab two men during an argument at an apartment complex late Friday night.
Court documents say Robert Richard Armijo, 23, was involved in an altercation at a Bozeman apartment complex in the 1200 block of North 12th Avenue, brandished a knife and charged at two separate men.
Bozeman police officers responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m. Friday. According to court documents, witnesses reported to dispatch that Armijo was intoxicated and trying to fight people on the outside stairwell of the apartment building.
Armijo had reportedly fled the scene when police arrived. Officers, working off differing reports of Armijo’s location, found and arrested him around 11:50 p.m. at a dead end on 9th Avenue.
As Armijo was transported to the Gallatin County Detention Center, officers interviewed witnesses at the scene.
A man who lives on the second floor of the apartment building said Armijo was intoxicated and challenged him to a fight in the building’s courtyard, later confronting the man at his apartment and brandishing a knife.
According to court documents, several other men restrained Armijo as he approached. Armijo pushed past the men and went back down the stairs. He allegedly then threw the knife at the man on the second floor from the ground level.
Other witnesses, including Armijo’s roommates, reportedly corroborated the victim’s account. A second man involved in the incident told police Armijo charged in his direction with the knife. The man said he believed Armijo intended to stab him.
Armijo appeared in Justice Court on Monday. He faces up to 20 years in prison for two counts of assault with a weapon. His bail was set at $75,000.
