Eric Lehman of Hawthorne Elementary School wants to make sure his students are staying up-to-date with the latest science.

He’s this week’s One Class At A Time recipient.

First Interstate Bank and KXLH recently surprised Lehman’s class to present him with a $250 check.

Lehman teaches science to all the fourth- and fifth-graders at Hawthorne.

He plans to buy science magazines designed for kids at that grade level. He says they combine interesting photos and stories with relevant scientific content.

“Our science textbooks, while some things don’t change, are getting a little dated, and trying to make connections for kids with science that’s happening right now, rather than something that was in a book 12 years ago,” Lehman said.

He also says the magazines will help students to practice reading informational text. It’s a skill they’re tested on every year.
