Bell ringer reports for duty in Helena

The Salvation Army kicked off their Red Kettle Bell operations on Friday, and bell ringer Zach Orr was in front of Murdoch’s in the Capital City asking for donations.

This is the first time Orr volunteered to ring the bell, and despite the cold, is happy to help the community.

Orr says shoppers started donating around at 6:00 a.m.

Helena Salvation Army captain Rob Lawler said they’re off to a pretty good start this year, and Orr is working hard for the cause.

"People of Helena are just wonderfully gracious and just keep up the donations and we’d love to have any of your pocket change," said Lawler.

"To be honest, it’s kind of tiring on the legs being out here for hours, but you know, it’s nice to see a lot of nice people out here," said Orr.

Last year, the community donated $73,000 to the Salvation Army and this year, the goal is at least match that, if not surpass that amount.

Lawler said they are currently short on volunteers.
