Children and teens will be heading back to school this week, which means nearly 80 school buses will be hitting roads across the Helena Valley this week.

With so many kids getting on and off buses, bus drivers and law enforcement officers say the emphasis is on safety.

“These children are our most important resource. The last thing they are thinking about is traffic coming to and from and around the bus,” said Jay Nelson, a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper.

“Especially when you have little kids who don t have enough knowledge about what could happen if a car hit them,” said Bevann Hamill, First Student Helena Manager. “The most dangerous part of a child’s day when they are being transported on a school bus is the loading and unloading.”

When the sign on the school bus is out, and the lights are flashing, whether you are on a two-lane road or a four-lane road, for the safety of children, you must stop.
