Fire triggers evacuations in Grant Creek area near Missoula

Posted

Residents in the Colorado Gulch area of Missoula are being evacuated due to a fast-moving brush fire.

The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office says Grant Creek Road is closed while crews battle the fire.

The fire sparked just after 6 p.m. and is approximately four miles north of Interstate 90 in Grant Creek area.

The fire apparently started when a power line was knocked down in the high winds on the east slopes of the Grant Creek Valley.

While the fire was initially reported at about two acres in size, our reporter at the scene says the fire appears to be closer to 10 to 15 acres.

At least one helicopter and two Neptune planes have been seen battling the flames, and engines from Missoula Rural Fire District were among the first officials to arrive at the scene.

The Rattlesnake recreation area is also closed.

We will update you as we get more information.

(UPDATE, 10:25 p.m.) Sheriff TJ McDermott and deputies just finished searching the Colorado Gulch area.

They discovered that a Fifth Wheel residence was burned in the fire, along with several vehicles and some out buildings. That resident has been accounted for.

Right now, no injures have been reported.

Deputies and fire personnel are continuing a roadblock at Colorado Gulch Road, but traffic is now open on Grant Creek.
