Stay safe on the ice

Colder weather has brought a layer of ice to many ponds and lakes around Montana and that means folks will soon be heading out to do a little ice fishing.

This Week in Fish and Wildlife FWP’s Morgan Jacobsen shares some safety tips with Montana This Morning’s Chet Layman.
Jacobsen says this time of year your best safety tool is patience. The weather has alternated from below freezing to above freezing and that means the ice is likely unstable. He also notes that the ice on one part of the body of water could be completely different than on another this time of year. Jacobsen says the magic number is 4 - inches of ice that is. Anything less than that could lead to serious problems. He also notes that the ice fishing season in many places in Montana is long so a little patience now will pay off later.
