Capital High School holds "Respect Rally"

Posted: Mar 07, 2018 4:34 PM Updated:

Capital High School students filled the gymnasium during lunch on Wednesday to help raise awareness for mental and emotional disabilities.

The Montana Behavioral Initiative Youth Activation Committee (MBI YAC) held the respect rally in conjunction with National Spread The Word To End The Word Day.

Over 300 students attended the rally and took the pledge to use 'respect' when referring to individuals with disabilities.

Capital High Junior Bryana Curry said using the R-word in a derogatory way is disrespectful and hurts individuals with intellectual disabilities.

“We’re going to try and unify the school with kids with disabilities and kids without,” Curry said.

Curry added that everyone deserves to be treated with the same respect, which makes people feel more accepted.
