The Montana Highway Patrol, Helena Police Department, and Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Department will increase patrols for the St. Patrick's Day weekend.

According to the Sheriff's Office and the Helena Police, the extra patrols will start on Thursday, March 15.

The extra officers will be paid through the Montana Department of Transportation's 'Vision Zero' initiative.

Deputy Michael Bruce said people should have a designated driver if they choose to drink and want to get home safely.

He added that all officers will pull people over if they suspect impaired driving.

"When we have major holidays in Lewis and Clark County, we will post extra DUI task force shifts, which are available," he said. "Being under the influence of alcohol can be very dangerous not only for yourself if you get in an accident but if you hit somebody else."

The public is encouraged to call 911 if they suspect a driver is drunk.
