BOZEMAN - Monday marked the ninth anniversary of an explosion on Main Street in Bozeman that claimed the life of Tara Reistad Bowman and injured others.

The explosion leveled five historical buildings and damaged several others on the 200 block of East Main Street in downtown Bozeman.

Investigators said the cause of the fire was a natural gas leak in the Montana Trails Gallery that ignited in flames on March 5, 2009.

Since then, city planners have worked to rebuild some of the buildings on the explosion site.

Crews rebuilt the Rocking R bar that replaced one of the structures while another building at 223 East Main Street is now under construction.

City planners said an additional building is also in the future.

“We would hope that the last building would be moving forward within the next year. We know there are some folks interested in that," Community Development Manager Chris Saunders said. "We don’t have a permit approved yet for the empty spot there. We hope that will be completed fairly soon."

Planners hope to have the last building completed in 2020.
