A Helena boy working to become a Boy Scout is using the movement known as the Little Free Library to reach his goal.

Areas across the United States are participating in Little Free Library where books are left in small libraries, often wooden boxes, for people to take or exchange.

Emily Free Wilson's son Clayton Wilson is a member of Cub Scout Pack 206 and his requirements obligate him start a project to "build a better community."

He and his mother created a Little Free Library, which will go on sale along with other libraries made by the Cub Scout Pack 206.

All proceeds from the Little Free Libraries will be donated to the Lewis and Clark Library.

"Some of the Little Free Library project is helping them accomplish some of their requirements before they move on to boy scouts," Emily said.

Emily said she had a great time creating the library with her son and believed the project was a great opportunity to bring the community together.

"If you put one in front of your business or in front of your home, then you sort of keep tabs on it so you can put books in it and people come and put books and take books and it becomes sort of this organic cool community building," she said.

Emily said she believes in the national Little Free Library movement because it encourages reading.

"It's a physical real reminder that books are important and that there is easy access to them if you can't get to the library," she said.

To participate in Little Free Library, follow these easy steps.

Identify a location and steward, get a library, register your library, build and support, and then add your library to the world map.

"Helena has twenty-five registered little free libraries," Emily said.
