Winter storm, school closures, and road conditions update

Posted: Feb 08, 2018 10:42 PM Updated:

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings for all of north-central Montana through Friday. The warning means significant amounts of ice and snow are likely, which will create major travel disruptions. Road crews will have a tough time keeping up with the volume of snow, so some highways in central and northern Montana could become impassable at times.

Havre is dealing with some of the worst of the storm, as heavy snow continues to pile up.

The City of Havre posted the following message on its website on Thursday evening:

Havre Residents,
Due to the amount of snow we have received during the last week, the City of Havre Public Works Department will be plowing streets in accordance with our Ice and Snow Plan. We are asking that if possible park your cars off the streets so make the process of clearing the streets more effect. The plowing will make it difficult for owners to move their cars once the street has been plowed. The City will not be able to clear snow away from the cars left on the street. The City will also only be clearing the street and alley intersections. As time, equipment and budget allows the City will continue additional snow removal. A copy of the Snow and Ice Plan is on the City’s website www.ci.havre.mt.us.

The Montana Department of Transportation is warning travelers that due to the rain, snow, and mixed precipitation along with extreme temperature changes, wet roads are expected to become extremely icy. MDT crews are out in full force and will continue to treat roads accordingly, but icy conditions are very likely followed by heavy snow in areas.
