Flower shops prepare for Valentine's Day

With Valentine's Day around the corner, flower shops are preparing for one of the busiest days of the year.

On Tuesday, workers at West Mont Flower and Trading Company began processing many of the flowers that will become Valentine's gifts.

"Flowers make everybody happy," program director Robin Farrell said. "When my wife and I do have flowers in our home, it's usually tulips or irises, daffodils, ranunculus."

According to Farrell, many of the flowers are brought in from out of state during this time of year.

"We buy them domestically so we can get them out of Washington which is really important for us we like to be able to buy them as much domestically as we can," Farrell said.

West Mont Flower and Trading Company will fill about 200 orders next week and about half of those orders will go out the door on February 14.

Succulents, plants that store water in their leaves, have become popular because they are relatively low maintenance.

"Put them in a window, kind of forget about them, don't require a lot of water, they're just low maintenance," Farrell said. "They're kind of life flowers, you can look at them on a daily basis and just smile."

Farrell said whatever flower or plants you choose, it's a good way to brighten up the winter.

"I am actually a fan of winter or I wouldn't live in Montana but I think just flowers are really special," Farrel said. "I think when you come in and see a bouquet of flowers on your table, it provides hope. I think its a real benefit to your soul."
