The man who died in a climbing accident on Sunday has been identified as Elton J. Adams of Great Falls.

According to Lewis & Clark County Coroner Bryan Backeburg, Adams was a 74-year old physician.

Dispatchers received a call around 1 p.m. that a a group of five people were ice-climbing at Cataract Falls west of Augusta when one man slipped and fell.

Lewis & Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton said in a press release that the man fell about 90 feet.

Cataract Falls is off of Elk Creek Road about 20 miles west of Augusta.

The Falls are remote and difficult to access with limited cell service and deep snow.

First responders arrived at around 3 p.m. and called for a Mercy Flight helicopter from Benefis Health System in Great Falls.

Mercy Flight could only reach Augusta due to weather and was ultimately canceled.

A rancher assisted with equipment to evacuate the victim from the area.

According to the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Office, Adams was an avid climber and familiar with the area.
