Big Brothers Big Sisters of Helena almost doubled the amount of money raised last year during the Bowl For Kids' Sake fundraiser.

The groups annual event raised $83,000 last weekend.

Last year, $45,000 in total was raised through a combination of the event and sponsors.

"We have matches that come every year and they get better at bowling," Claire O'Connell, BBBS Helena office manager, said. "My own children who used to not know how to bowl, they came yesterday and they know how to bowl now. Everybody just did a little bit more this year and it was a lot of fun."

Organizers said a large portion of the money will go towards staffing.

According to BBBS, volunteers undergo an extensive process including background checks to ensure child safety.

BBBS Helena reported that they have over 30 kids who are still waiting to be matched.

On a side note, BBBS office manager Claire O'Connell said that 1,400 slices of pizza were eaten during the Bowl For Kids' Sake fundraiser.
