Community members filled the Ray Bjork Learning Center meeting room on Tuesday to learn more about the food in the Helena School District.

The Kid’s Hunger Coalition and Sodexo along with the Helena School District held “Build Our Plate Together” as a community forum to discuss the meals currently being served to students and the future of school food with the new schools under construction.

Sodexo is the company that is contracted out by the school district to provided nutrition.

Attendees voiced their comments about the food programs, kitchen limitations, and meal waste in the schools.

Helena Public Schools Food Service Director Robert Worthy said he wants to hear more from the public and help inform them about the current limitation his program faces and help get people involved.

“Having people aware of that may be able to create change,” Worthy said. “People in the community that want to help, maybe they can start realizing there’s ways you can. “

Worthy said he is always happy to receive community feedback and suggestions but stresses that the safety of the kids will always come first.

Event organizers said everyone that turned out was passionate about the schools’ meals and they are looking forward to continuing the discussion with the community.

Helena School Board Chair Sarah Sullivan attended the meeting and said the initial meeting was a success and is looking forward to the next one.
