MHP trooper injured after patrol car hit by speeding driver

UPDATE: The Montana Highway Patrol posted the following information on its Facebook page on January 23:

This is what happens when you get rear-ended at over 100 miles per hour. Words can't express the extreme disappointment and frustration that we feel in having to report yet another completely avoidable crash that risked the life of one of our troopers. Thankfully, Trooper Geoff Groshelle "only" suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident.

On January 19th, 2018 Trooper Groshelle was traveling northbound in the right lane at just under highway speeds- between 78-80 mph. He was attempting to locate a Mustang traveling over 100 miles per hour on I-15, when he was struck by the vehicle from behind. The driver was later arrested and processed for Driving Under the Influence. We are working with the Cascade County's Attorney's Office regarding any further charges.

Trooper Groshelle was transported by ambulance, treated and later released from the hospital. He is very sore, has a headache which is the result of a likely minor concussion and has a stiff back and a soft tissue injury or sprain to his leg.

(1st Report, January 19) A Montana Highway Patrol trooper has been released from the hospital after being hit in his vehicle on Interstate 15.

It happened at about 4 p.m. on Friday after the MHP received reports of a sports car driving in excess of 100 miles per hour, heading north on 1-15 between Helena and Great Falls.

An MHP trooper took the call and was looking for the vehicle, driving north near Cascade at highway speeds.

The suspect vehicle then crashed into the back of the trooper's vehicle.

The trooper was taken by ambulance to Benefis Health System in Great Falls.

We're told he was hurt, but didn't suffer life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

According to the MHP, a 60-year old man from Great Falls was driving the suspect vehicle.

Speed, along with alcohol and/or drugs are considered potential factors in the incident.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released, pending the filing of any possible criminal charges or citations.

The MHP is continuing to investigate.

This marks at least the sixth time in recent weeks that a law enforcement vehicle has been hit by another vehicle.

(1st Report, 6:33 p.m.) A Montana Highway Patrol vehicle was hit by another vehicle along I-15 on Friday. It happened on Friday afternoon near Cascade.

There were no serious injuries reported.

Raini Way posted the following message on the KRTV Facebook page:

A ... speedster cut my sister and myself off on the interstate earlier today, getting dangerously close to our vehicle. We saw several miles later, between Cascade and Ulm, that he hit an MHP car. We saw that both drivers were okay (they sent two more HP and an ambulance to assist).

We have not yet been able to get any other details from the Montana Highway Patrol, nor confirm whether the driver was speeding.

We will update you when we get more information.
