Malmstrom Air Force Base welcomed its newest military working dog recently.

Kay joined the 341st Security Forces Group on January 8th.

Kay is the third K-9 that Senior Airman Benjamin Huntley has worked with during his career as a handler.

Huntley decided he wanted to be a handler when he saw a K-9 demonstration in high school.

“It takes a lot of dedication and motivation. You come out to the kennels and volunteer. They will show you the ropes and then you apply for the job,” Huntley said.

Once accepted, handlers head to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for their training, which is where the military workings dogs receive their training as well.

Huntley says once the handler goes to their first duty assignment, they go over everything they learned in school, and the handler and the dog start to bond.

"The bond is important because you’re putting your life on the line with the military working dog and the military working dog is putting his life on the line for you. You need to understand that dog and the dog needs to understand you,” Huntley said.

Huntley says he and Kay will also work on his obedience and detection work that he will perform around base.

This is Kay's first duty station and he will be turning two next month.

Huntley and Kay will not only help support the mission at Malmstrom but they will also be called upon to help in the local and national communities as well.
