Clifton Wells of Bozeman appeared in Justice Court on Tuesday to face his sixth DUI charge.

Wells, 39 years old, was arrested Sunday after a Belgrade police officer patrolling on Jackrabbit Lane allegedly found Wells in his pickup truck, parked in the middle of the road.

According to court documents, Wells got out of his vehicle and the officer noticed he was unsteady on his feet with slurred speech and watery eyes.

The officer reported that Wells admitted drinking alcohol before driving, and a flask and open beer cans were seen in the vehicle.

Due to winter weather conditions, the officer took Wells to the Belgrade Police Department to conduct field sobriety tests on him.

The results indicated that Wells was under the influence.

Wells agreed to provide a preliminary breath sample that showed his alcohol level to be .283, which is more than three times the legal limit for driving.

He also agreed to a blood sample that was drawn at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital before Wells was taken to Gallatin County Detention Center.

Wells’ criminal history includes five DUI convictions.

Judge Bryan Adams set his bail at $5,000 with minimum alcohol testing of three times per week via a Soberlink device.
