Posted: Dec 24, 2017 2:59 PM Updated:

Story Highlights

  • Brutally cold air is now settling into Montana
  • Snow will make driving tough across southwest parts of the state
  • Wind chills could dip to -30° through Tuesday

Winter Weather Advisory

The STORMTracker Weather Team says a storm system will bring more snow to southwest Montana through Christmas Day.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for parts of western and southern Montana (including Helena) through Monday, where the snow could make driving difficult.

Meteorologist Mike Rawlins says 1-3" of snow is likely in this area, with some cities getting 3-5" of fresh snow.

Anyone driving through the mountain passes in this area or along Interstate 90 should be prepared for winter driving conditions and allow plenty of additional time to reach your destination.

Dangerously cold air arrives

It's already cold, but it's going to get even colder heading into Christmas.

A cold front arriving from Canada will drop temperatures below zero for Christmas morning.

Rawlins says the frigid air will hang around through the day, with most cities in north-central Montana staying below zero all day long.

In addition to the brutally cold temperatures, north winds of 5-15 mph will push wind chill values to dangerously low levels through Tuesday.

Wind chill values of -15 to -30° are expected, which could lead to frostbite and hypothermia within minutes.

Those venturing outdoors should be prepared and dressed appropriately for this extreme winter weather, covering any exposed skin.

The National Weather Service in Glasgow has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for Phillips, Valley, Daniels and Roosevelt County through Tuesday.
