(BOZEMAN) You may notice a change when you get your new registration for your vehicle next year, as the state is making changes to license plate tabs.
Currently, the tabs are colored black and white, in an effort to save the state money.
But officials are making the change to colored tabs to make it easier for law enforcement in the state to recognize if you have an expired tag.
“It's quicker to check a color to see if a plate is expired than to run the plate,” said Sgt. Patrick McLaughlin of the Montana Highway Patrol. “I can tell you when we went to black and white, officers were pulling over fewer registration violations.”
Colonel Tom Butler of the Montana Highway Patrol said, “The new colored tabs will significantly assist law enforcement officers in identifying drivers who are in compliance with valid vehicle registration and those who are not. The Montana Highway Patrol would like to thank the Motor Vehicle Division for seeking law enforcement input throughout this process.”
The new colored tabs will be available on January 2, 2018.
