Over 4,000 pounds of whole food donated to Helena Food Share

Helena's community gardens donated 4,228 pounds of whole food to Helena Food Share from this year's summer harvest.

Each garden has a plot dedicated to the organization.

Pat Christian is a volunteer at Helena Food Share and is on the Community Gardens board.

"It's also important for the gardeners who do the donating," Christian said. "There's a little, not competition, but a little pride of how much each garden contributes so people feel really good about producing food for other people."

Christian said Helena's community gardens are important because fresh produce grows in the summer and harvest goes into fall.

"We're dry, we're rocky, the growing season isn't long and yet there are people growing lots of great food," Christian said.

Because of Montana's weather, fresh fruit and vegetables can be scarce during winter months for Helena Food Share's pantry.

Donations from grocery stores can help fill the need during the winter and spring.

While the Food Share always accepts donations, it mostly tries to keep the produce cooler full.

"We've really had customers in the last two years say Helena Food Share is where they can get their produce now," Kara Snyder, Helena Food Share's program manager, said.

Helena Food Shard added that they want the people they help to have a variety of fresh foods to choose from, not just canned goods.

"And, in general, that's what Helena Food Share is all about," Snyder said. "It's just a community that we've built here and people share with each other."

You can drop off Helena Food Share donations at 1616 Lewis Street on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Tuesdays through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
