First responders and 9/11 victims honored in Helena

Posted: Updated:

(HELENA) First responders gathered at the Capitol in Helena on Monday to remember and honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The memorial service also honored the people who rush toward danger in order to save others.

It was all part of the Heroes of Helena event, held at Albertsons on North Montana Avenue. Fire departments, law enforcement agencies and ambulance services showed off some of their emergency vehicles. There was even a medical helicopter from Reach Air Medical Services.

The event also included live music and vendors. All the proceeds from food sales went toward local rural firefighters, while a silent auction raised money for a program to provide coffee for local veterans’ groups.

Eric Dowell, an assistant store manager, said he started organizing Heroes of Helena two years ago, as a way to bring first responders and the public together in friendlier, more informal situations. He said that’s an especially valuable opportunity this year.

“It’s an eye-opener for as close as some of these fires have been and as bad as the smoke has been,” Dowell said. “It’s a real eye-opener for the public to come down here, a great opportunity in a relaxed environment to come down and meet some of these guys.”

This is just one in a series of fundraising events Dowell has organized for local emergency responders.  He said he’s been impressed with how successful they have been.

The public is amazing in this town for taking care of these guys who take care of them,” he said.
