(GREAT FALLS) The Montana Bale Trail exhibits will be out in full force on Sunday, September 10th.

This will be the 28th year of the "Montana Bale Trail: What the Hay" contest.

The display of decorated and often whimsical hay bales and hay-themed sculptures lines a 22-mile route from Hobson to Utica to Windham.

Everyone who attends the Bale Trail will be given a ballot to vote for their favorite sculpture. There is no cost to drive by the bales, nor to vote.

The bale trail started as a prank between two farmers, and over the years it has grown to an annual event with around 50 bale sculptures.

The Hay Zoo in Hobson will feature a display of old favorites on the museum grounds.  The Hay Zoo is interactive and gives people the opportunity to see the bales up close. The “What the Hay” (Montana Bale Trail) is organized by The Friends of the Hobson Library/Museum and sponsored by local businesses and private individuals.  It is held annually on the first Sunday following Labor Day in conjunction with the Utica Day Fair.  This truly unique event features “am-hayzingly” creative and (most often) quite amusing sculptures made of hay and straw.
