BOZEMAN -

Family and friends of Melissa Barnes, the woman who was killed by two dogs last month, hosted a fundraiser Saturday at Smith's Grocery Store in Bozeman over the weekend.

People close to Barnes came together with the help of Smith's to serve burgers and hot dogs to anyone passing by.

They encouraged donations to help the Barnes family pay for the expenses of losing a loved one.

Family friend Heather Combs says the outpouring of support has been a blessing.

“The family has had numerous members who have worked [at Smith’s] and some who still do work here, and with an unexpected death, there’s a lot of expenses that come into play, and the family could really use some help,” said Combs.

"It's been phenomenal today, along with the messages on Facebook and just people contacting and wanting to help, so as everyone knows Bozeman is a fantastic community and we really appreciate all of the help," said Combs.

Wayne Bartlett, the owner of the two dogs that caused the death of Barnes, has been charged with several misdemeanors.

Bartlett is facing two counts of having a vicious/dangerous dog, and two counts of failure to have current rabies vaccinations.

They dogs were taken to the Montana Department of Livestock’s Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, which does animal necropsies, and tested negative for rabies.

That meant the victim's organs were able to be donated.

The dogs were euthanized on June 26th.

Bartlett has until July 28th to make his appearance in Justice Court.

A GoFundMe Page for the family has been set up to help the Barnes family.
