GREAT FALLS -

Kaleb Edward Daniels and Johnnie Schmockel, inmates in the Cascade County Detention Center, have been charged after they allegedly assaulted a fellow inmate.

Court documents state that video surveillance shows that the victim (identified only as John Doe) was standing by the cells in the N-Block of the jail when he was approached by another inmate who began to hit him in the head and body. Daniels and Schmockel then joined in assaulting Doe.

After assaulting him, the suspects stopped, and Doe went to the cell block door and began hitting the window to get the attention of jail staff.

The three men then went up Doe and began assaulting him again; Doe reportedly tried to fight back without success. A fourth inmate then approached and joined in the assault.

Doe was eventually pushed into a stack of meal trays, and Daniels and Schmockel began hitting Doe with the trays multiple times.

Daniels and Schmockel have each been charged with felony assault with a weapon.

Prosecutors requested that bond for Daniels be set at $50,000, consecutive to any other bond. Court documents state that Daniels has convictions for theft, obstructing a peace officer, disorderly conduct, and criminal possession of dangerous drugs. He is currently jailed on charges of attempted deliberate homicide, burglary, and tampering with evidence.

Prosecutors requested that bond for Schmockel be set at $10,000, consecutive to any other bond, due to the nature of the offense. Court documents note that Schmockel has convictions for disorderly conduct and carrying a concealed weapon while under the influence. He is currently jailed on a pending charge of robbery.
