HELENA -

Voters in the Helena School District will select two new members of the Board of Trustees in the upcoming election.

Six candidates are running to fill the open seats: Pam Attardo, Annie Hanshew, Jeff Hindoien, Luke Muszkiewicz, Jason Pettit, and Erin Turner.

Each voter can select up to two candidates. Ballots must be returned to the county elections office by May 2.

Jason Pettit says he’s running for the Helena School District Board of Trustees in order to bring a different perspective to the board.

“In order for parents to have a say, I think sitting on the school board is the way to do it,” he said.

Pettit is a private health care worker who has lived in the Helena area for about 25 years. He has three children currently attending Central School, and one more that will go there next year. This is his first time running for school board.

Pettit says the district hasn’t moved quickly enough to get Central students back into their neighborhood, after the historic school building was closed over safety concerns four years ago.

In general, he wants to see more spending on Helena’s aging school facilities. He would like the district to consider hiring more maintenance workers.

“Our newest school was built in the late ‘70s,” Pettit said. “We haven’t done the proper maintenance that needed to be done on any of them.”

Pettit says he supports the district’s bond proposal that would pay for three new elementary schools, including a replacement for Central. He says it would be a first step toward dealing with all the school’s infrastructure needs.

“We need to start rebuilding all the schools, but we have to start somewhere, and Central is one that we need to look at,” he said. “Same with Jim Darcy, Rossiter and Bryant.”
