GREAT FALLS -

Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks is investigating the discovery of three mule deer shot and left alongside a road just northwest of Great Falls.

Two does and a young buck were found early Friday morning next to Vineyard Road.

The animals were apparently shot on Thursday night, according to FWP game warden Kqyn Kuka.

FWP asks that anyone with information about the incident to contact Kuka at 750-3574.

You can also call 1-800-TIPMONT; callers are kept confidential and may be eligible for a reward.

MT FWP provides the following information about poaching:

Poaching is the illegal killing of fish or wildlife. It can include illegal killing of fish or wildlife:

  • for commercial trade
  • for ego gratification
  • in closed areas, during closed times, or taking more than the law allows

FWP investigations of organized and professional poaching grew from about 20 in the 1990s to about 40 new cases a year today. In addition, poachers:

  • reduce recreational opportunities for law abiding anglers, hunters, wildlife watchers, and other outdoor enthusiasts
  • kill and waste Montana game animals, threatened and endangered species, and even nongame animals
  • target Montana's fish and wildlife resource for personal profit
