Samuel Cecil Cole of Helena has been charged with four felonies after he allegedly left his two children inside a burning car last week.

Prosecutors allege that Cole assaulted his domestic partner twice last week, cutting her several time with a knife in one instance, and hitting her several time on her head in the other.

Cole was arrested on Friday after getting a vehicle stuck in the snow on York Road.

While he was trying to free the vehicle, the engine caught fire, and his two children were strapped inside in their car seats.

Court documents allege that when the fire started, Cole ran away from the scene.

A family member told us that Cole's girlfriend was there, and she got the children out of the vehicle, but MTN has not yet been able to confirm that.

Cole is charged with criminal child endangerment, assault with a weapon, and aggravated partner/family member assault.

He is also charged with a felony for issuing a bad check in December.

Cole made his initial court appearance on Monday.

Bond for Cole was set at $50,000.

The condition of the children is not addressed in court documents, nor was it addressed during Cole's court appearance.

UPDATE: The mother of the children told MTN News after the original article was posted: "My children are fine I was the one who got them unstrapped from their carseats as he was walking away."

She also said: "We ended up at St. Pete's (hospital) the evening it happened and we were checked they also were very generous with a gift from the staff to help with lost items. And everyone who was at the scene were extremely helpful it only took maybe 20-30 mins until they found Sam after the accident."

In September 2015, Cole was charged after he allegedly drove head-on toward a law enforcement vehicle and then drove erratically through a trailer park with his infant child in the truck.  We do not know the disposition of the charges in that case.
