High school students explore options at college fair

HELENA -

The Montana Post Secondary Educational Opportunities Council hosted a college fair at the Carroll College gym on Monday.

About 500 students from seven high schools took part in the event.

They got information on admissions, financial aid, and other college readiness tips.

Students were able to talk with representatives from nearly 80 institutions.

They ranged from Montana colleges and universities to schools from Alaska and Missouri.

Amy Leary, MPSEOC’s director, says bringing all those institutions together in one room helps students understand they have opportunities beyond their hometown or state.

”It’s amazing to see the effects that it has on students,” Leary said. “They leave, and some students who thought they would never go to college often leave this room saying, ‘I’m going to go some place,’ which is pretty exciting to see.”

MPSEOC has been sponsoring college fairs around the state for about 30 years.

This week, they’re hosting six events in western Montana.

The tour started in Butte Monday morning, and it will continue to Missoula, Hamilton, Polson, and Kalispell.
