Mustangs beat Voyagers, headed to Pioneer League Championship

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS – Baseball is a funny game.

The Great Falls Voyagers won 15 straight games between August and September. The Billings Mustangs meanwhile lost eight of nine over a similar stretch. So naturally, Billings swept Great Falls in the Pioneer League North Division Series to clinch a spot in the championship.

The Mustangs beat Great Falls 5-1 in game two Saturday night in front of 1,809 fans at Dehler Park.

John Sansone was 3-4, including a two-run homerun in the bottom of the 2nd inning that gave the Mustangs a lead they’d never relinquish.  Taylor Trammell and Michael Beltre each collected two hits and combined to score three of the Mustangs’ five runs.

Wennington Romero, an 18-year-old pitching just his second game with the Mustangs, gave up just one run in 6 2/3 innings, striking out six.  The lefty from the Dominican Republic made his Billings debut Sept. 6 at Helena.  Joel Kuhnel recorded the final seven outs, striking out Casey Schroeder to end the game.

Billings won game one of the series, 7-3, Friday night in Great Falls.

The Mustangs now await the winner of the South Division.  Orem and Ogden split the first two games of their playoff series.  Game three is schedule for Sunday at 4:05 pm MDT.

Billings will host game one of the best-of-three Pioneer League Championship.  That game was originally scheduled for Tuesday at Dehler Park, but a scheduling conflict caused the league to push it to Wednesday.  Teams are attempting to move it back to Tuesday, with no official word from the league yet.

The Mustangs would travel for game two, and three if necessary.
