Former NFL coach Dick Vermeil addresses MCA Clinic in Great Falls

GREAT FALLS -

For the 49th year, coaches from Montana gathered in Great Falls to learn tricks of the trade and hear from coaching legends at the annual Montana Coaches Association Clinic.

And in 2016, organizers delivered with a big name - former NFL head coach Dick Vermeil delivered the keynote address Wednesday afternoon to a packed auditorium at Great Falls High School.

Vermeil’s career includes stops with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.

He’s known best for his time with the St. Louis Rams where he won a Super Bowl title in 1999 and was the architect of the Rams’ high powered offense knows as the “Greatest Show on Turf”.

But Vermeil came from humble coaching beginnings. He started at the high school level and worked his way up through the college and professional ranks. He credits his team’s success to the process, not the playbook. He calls his message ‘Common Sense Coaching’.

“I talk about what I think made a difference in my coaching career as a head coach and as a leader,” Vermeil said Wednesday. “How important it is to be honest and sincere and build it into a philosophy of teaching and coaching to help people get better, that's what coaches are supposed to do!"

Vermeil says he comes to Montana every November to hunt and fish near Bozeman, but this stop in Montana is short.

He’s catching an overnight flight to Canton, Ohio, to catch the Hall of Fame induction of his former player, Rams lineman Orlando Pace.

The MCA Clinic continues through Friday with several other clinicians including Oregon men’s basketball coach Dana Altman, and former US Olympian Sherry Winn.
