Carroll football selected third in Frontier Conference coaches poll

Posted: Updated:

The Frontier Conference held its annual football media day Tuesday in Great Falls. Each of the eight head coaches addressed the media about the state of their programs.

The conference’s preseason coaches poll was also released Tuesday with Southern Oregon earning the top spot. Montana Tech, which won the conference a season ago, and Carroll rounded out the top three.

"We have our work cut out for us," said head coach Mike Van Diest of his team that finished 4-6 last year, the worst record in his 17 years at Carroll. "As a coaching staff we have to be more accountable. We have enough talent now we have to put them in a place to do well."

Southern Oregon was ranked No. 2 in the NAIA during the spring football polls. Montana Tech was ranked seventh in that poll while Montana Western landed at No. 16.

The Raiders have advanced to the NAIA national championship in each of the past two years, and claimed a title in 2014. Veteran SOU coach Craig Howard credits his teams postseason success to a tough Frontier Conference schedule.

"I know and you know that the road to Dayton runs through places like Havre and Billings and Helena," Howard said. "The thing I find in five years of coaching in this league is that it's tough to get to the playoffs. But once you get there the competition in this league certainly prepares you for the playoffs better than anything we've got in America."

The Frontier Conference football season kicks off on August 27 when Rocky Mountain College travels to MSU-Northern. Western hosts Dickinson State on the same day.

Below are the results of the Frontier Conference coaches poll.
